Howe, Lightfoot and Downie.

They’re just three of the 11 famous Canadian Gordons ranked by Maclean’s magazine in their second-annual Book of Lists.

The decidedly quirky compilation of Canadian trivia – it includes lists like the greatest playoff beards and the five best songs about the provinces – is a special edition of the weekly magazine, featuring rankings and ratings on everything from life and love to entertainment, sports, food, science, nature, business and politics.

There’s also lists from homegrown heavyweights like Don Cherry and Rick Mercer. Cherry, an enthusiast if perhaps not an expert, offers tips on dressing well, while Mercer explains how to rant.

The hockey player (Howe), the singer (Lightfoot) and the Tragically Hip frontman (Downie) join CityNews’ own Gord Martineau on the list of Gordons. The other seven are broadcaster Gordon Sinclar, chidlren’s author Gordon Korman, actor Gordon Pinsent, former federal finance minister Walter Gordon, War of 1812 hero Sir Gordon Drummond, Royal Bank CEO and president Gordon Nixon and British Columbia premier Gordon Campbell.

The list does not include the Barenaked Ladies debut album Gordon, but the boys from Scarborough are featured elsewhere in the book: they wrote the theme song to the U.S. sitcom The Big Bang Theory and CBC listeners named If I Had $1,000,000 the second-most definitive Canadian song of all time. (Ian and Sylvia’s Four Strong Winds was No. 1.)

There are 323 rankings in all – click here for more.
